Foreigners can obtain a seasonal or annual temporary residence permit on the basis of employment, real estate ownership or family reunification, if one family member already has a temporary residence permit. The client is required to prepare a valid passport, as well as a non-conviction certificate of no criminal record, issued by the Ministry of Interior Affairs from the country of origin.

It is extremely important that a foreigner makes a tourist registration within 24 hours of entering Montenegro.

A foreigner who owns real estate property in Montenegro can apply for a temporary residence permit in Montenegro. Based on a temporary residence permit, a foreigner can stay in Montenegro for a year, without the obligation to leave the country. After that, it is possible to apply for a permit extension, i.e. renewal for an additional year. The condition for extension is a stay in Montenegro for at least 11 months in the last year.

If one family member has a temporary residence permit, other family members have the opportunity to apply for a temporary residence permit in Montenegro, and have the right to stay in Montenegro for one year, without the obligation to leave the country. Based on a temporary residence permit, a foreigner can stay in Montenegro for a year, without the obligation to leave the country. After that, it is possible to apply for an extension of the permit for an additional year, in case the foreigner has been outside Montenegro for less than a month in the previous year, in accordance with the Law on Foreigners.

In addition, a foreigner is able to register a vehicle in Montenegro on the basis of a temporary residence permit for foreigners.

In addition, a person who has more than 50% stake in the company and who is also the director of the company under the Law of Montenegro has the right to obtain a permanent residence permit (after 5 years of regular renewal of temporary residence and work permit, and in compliance with legal regulations).

An additional benefit is the possibility of obtaining a permanent residence permit for the director of the company in the case of five consecutive temporary residence permits obtained with previously fulfilled conditions prescribed by the Law on Foreigners.

In addition, if one family member is employed and has a temporary residence and work permit, other family members (spouse, and children under the age of 17) are entitled to free health insurance, at no additional charge.

One of the conditions for the extension of a temporary residence permit is that a foreigner did not stay outside Montenegro for more than a month. In case of stay outside Montenegro for more than a month, it is not possible to extend the residence permit, but it is possible to apply for a completely new residence and work permit. The exception is in cases when a foreigner is the director of the company.

Another requirement is that the company in which the foreigner is employed regularly pays taxes and contributions for the employer.

In cases when the period of validity of the document for temporary residence expires, it is necessary to submit a request for extension one month before the end of the validity of the document.

The client is obliged to submit the original or a certified copy of the diploma or certificate of graduation, as well as a certificate of passed exams or a diploma supplement. The process of nostrification of the diploma takes about 3 months.
